The United Nations Climate Change Conference is over

What does COP23 mean for the transport sector?

In 2016 UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon demanded sustainable, environmental transport systems. That call is still valid.

The transport sector causes 25 per cent of the global energy related emissions. Road transport is responsible for 74 per cent of the transport related emissions. It can be assumed that the freight transport will expand in the next decades. The need for rethinking is self evident.

Therefore the UN Climate Change Conference organised a „Transport Thematic Day“ on 11 November. In particular the question was raised, which measures the transport sector should take to contribute to the success of the Paris Convention. The penal discussion debating the issue „Sustainable freight for a low-carbon transport system“ considered both road freight transport und rail freight transport. A shift from road to rail and the importance of inermodality are two essential keywords.

The „Transport Thematic Day“ was organised by International Association of Public Transport (UITP), International Transport Forum (ITF), International Union of Railways (UIC) and the Paris Process on Mobility and Climate (PPMC).
